What is the role of the engineering mentor?
The engineer (or engineering student) serves as an advisor to the students, usually a team of 3. The engineer is involved in all phases of the competition and provides input and technical assistance, integrating real life engineering experiences as the students work on the competition. The students do all the actual work, such as the computer design of the city, building of the tabletop model, writing the essay and presenting the project during the competition. Typical time commitment is 1 or 2 hours per week.
